Larry McKinley

Larry McKinley was born in Chicago in 1927 and was a pivotal figure in the history of New Orleans’ rhythm and blues, rock n roll scene. Known as “Friendly” Larry and “Voice of Jazz Fest”, McKinley was a music promoter, record label co-owner, radio personality, and festival icon. He launched scores of hit records, including Ray Charles’ “What’d I Say” and promoted other artists, such as Irma Thomas, Benny Spellman, Jessie Hill, and Chris Kenner. McKinley won several awards and was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.
